NEW YORK -For Kargosh Fernanda, Chinese New Year carries a special meaning. Her given name, she explains, means "rabbit" in Hindi. She was given that name because she was born in the Year of the Rabbit, according to the Chinese zodiac.
Ms. Fernanda, a retired healthcare worker from New Jersey, attended the Saturday afternoon showing of the Chinese New Year Splendor at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Featuring the talents of the Divine Performing Arts, the show includes a number of ethnic dances and stories told through classical Chinese dance. Accompanying each performance is also the music of the Divine Performing Arts Orchestra, which incorporates both Chinese and western musical instruments.
"The show is fantastic," said Fernanda. "I loved the drums. [The] dancing is beautiful, the costumes, the colors … but I loved the drums," she said.
"The show is so fantastic," she reiterated.
Not only are there elements of the Chinese New Year in her name, Ms. Fernanda's birthday happens to coincide with the Chinese New Year Splendor show in Manhattan.
"That's why I'm here celebrating the New Year on my birthday," she said. The Chinese New Year Splendor will conclude its run in New York on Saturday night, Feb. 9.
